How to Remove a Bathtub Drain Stopper

As the name suggests, a bathtub drain stopper is a small device that is placed over the drain in the tub to prevent water from going down the drain. There are several situations when you might need to remove the drain stopper. Perhaps the drain is blocked and you’re looking to clear the clog, or maybe you simply want to clean the stopper and the drain area. Whatever the reason, removing a bathtub drain stopper is a fairly straightforward process.

How to Remove a Bathtub Drain Stopper

In this guide, Mr. Rooter Plumbing walks you through the steps to remove different types of bathtub drain stoppers. Our plumbers specialize in all things related to bathroom plumbing. Before we get to the step-by-step process, here are the common types of bathtub drain stoppers:

  • Lift and turn stopper
  • Push and pull stopper
  • Toe touch stopper
  • Pop-up stopper

How to Remove a Lift-and-Turn Drain Stopper

  • This is the classic type with a knob on top. First, grip the knob firmly and lift it straight up.
  • Once lifted, rotate the knob either clockwise or counterclockwise. The direction may vary depending on the specific model.
  • Once rotated, the stopper should lift out of the drain.

How to Remove a Push-and-Pull Drain Stopper

  • A push-and-pull drain stopper is somehow similar to the lift-and-turn. To remove this type of stopper, press the stopper down firmly until it engages with the drain mechanism.
  • Pull the stopper straight up to remove it from the drain. If it feels tight, use a towel or rubber grip for better traction.

If you encounter resistance or difficulties, consult the manufacturer's instructions or seek assistance from a plumbing repair service.

How to Remove a Toe-Touch Drain Stopper

  • Make sure the push-and-pull stopper is in the open (up) position to make removal easier.
  • Use your foot to push the spring-loaded stopper down. This action will prompt the stopper to engage with the drain mechanism.
  • Next, use your foot to lift the stopper straight up. It may require a bit of force.

Note that some toe-touch stoppers may have a small lever or button that needs to be pressed before lifting. If you're unsure, consult the manufacturer's instructions or try gently pressing around the stopper.

How to Remove a Pop-Up Drain Stopper

  • Put the stopper in the open (up) position and try pulling it out by hand.
  • If the stopper doesn’t come out easily, try twisting it counterclockwise by hand. This loosens the stopper from the drain mechanism.
  • Continue twisting until it lifts out.

How to Remove a Flip-It Drain Stopper

  • Locate the lever on top of the stopper and flip it to the side. This should disengage the stopper from the drain mechanism.
  • Once the lever is flipped, lift the stopper straight up to remove it from the drain.
